Live Sand Diversity (divided from cycling Vs cooking)

I think it is best to exchange a small percentage (up to 20%) of your live rock every year with new live rock (fresh from ocean after curing). The "old" rock can be sold off for a discount to be used for filtration in a fish tank.

And... Anthony, natural seawater supply (not cured but pure, adding small amounts, may be less than 10%/month - I'm living just in the Med coast and it's easy for me...) could also help to improve biodiversity in our DSBed; My limited experience shows that thso fact is completely true

I must admit that I do not recommend the use of natural seawater to inexperienced aquarists. They usually are unable to assess when or if a pathogenic or pollutant issue exists (however rare that may be). Also, most aquarists do not have access to truly clean seawater. This is a valid concern.

What can you do in countries were you don't have access to detrivore kits or live sand ? How can you activate the sand ? Is it conviniento to stablish a DSB if you don't count with the necessary fauna ?

Without the necessary animals, would it be better to set up a remote DSB in a bucket ?

good question, Fatboy... and it reminds/reinforces the issue of the question we must ask ourselves: "What is our principal goal with the use of sand?"

When the primary goal is natural nitrate reduction, then indeed biodiversity of macrofauna is a small issue. And a remote DSB may be better.

But for refugia and plankton generating substrates, seeding is helpful. Without access to detritavore kits, sand swaps with fellow aquarists helps. And numerous organisms (worms and crustaceans) from good live rock (and rock with transshipped corals) can innoculate your sand bed as well.
