Hi Eric

I've changed my aquarium a few days before and I started to have problems with my corals. I've lost a lot of them. The tissue of the acros looks like swollen with liquid. The bubbles pop and then the acro quickly degenerates.

I suspect mainly of two things:

- light quantity and quality. Changed from HQI 2*150w to 2*250w 14.000 ºK in both cases.

- to much stress due to the change and lots of toxic compounds in the water. Although the water is carbon filtered.

Any idea? Please, find enclosed a photo.

Thanks in advance and best regards.

Hola Eric,

He cambiado el acuario hace unos dias y he empezado a tener problemas con los corales. He perdido muchos.

Alguna idea? Adjunto una foto

Gracias por adelantado y un saludo.

Hi Eric, I've changed all things, the acuarium itself, the pumps, the skimmer, lights and of course, water.

Please describe the water change..did you change salt mixes? Also, is the salinity the same? What about the other water parameters?

Ahora traduzco yo:

Hi Eric

Thanks for answering.

Yes, I've changed the salt brand. First it was Marinemix, from Hw. Now I've used the salt from Corallen-Zuch.

The same salinity and same paremeters. Standard values.

The main suspect is light change.

But some days ago, I've seen some algae patches that look like Gymnodinium. I still could't check it under the microscope. Do you think it is toxic to acroporas? Tridacnas, corallimorpharians and fish are all OK.

Hola Eric. Gracias por contestar.

He cambiado de sal.

Dinoflagellates would kill snails, first, I think. I believe it is the entire process of tank change that is responsible, possibly involving the new salt, as well. However, I cannot say for sure, but anytime there is a dramatic change in a tank, corals may be stressed to the point that they die, and some species when they undergo a stress-related rapid death by tissue sloughing can produce active enzymes called caspases that trigger the reaction in other sensitive species.

Eric, I translated "tissue sloughing" by "tissue gangrening", is difficult to find a verb with the same meaning than to slough in spanish.

Or do you wanna mean "slough off"?

I hope is ok, if not let me know and i will change it.

Snails are Ok as well as other molluscs like tridacnas. When there are red tides in the sea, clams, oysters and mussels are fine but they accumulate the toxin.

I thought that it could be related to dinoflagellates because when I brush some patches the next day more corals are bleached. It seems that something is released to water by this algae that affects the acrporas mainly and in a minor stage to sotfties.

Probably dinoflagellate (if any) are a consequence of the whole change in the aquarium.

---------------------
