Hi Anthony,

I'm still fighting the Zoanthid eating nudibranchs.

I want to learn more about their reproduction and incubation. Could you point me to some information or give me the species name so I can research further?

Also, you mentioned you might have the name of some fish that are natural predators of these undesireable buggers. Please let me know if you can.

Thanks,
Enrique

Hola Anthony

Gracias
Enrique

this is a difficult problem... I have observed what I believe to be 4 different genera of nudibranchs preying on zooanthids. There surely are many, many more on the reefs (likely dozens of species!)

As for natural control... aquarists have used a number of different fishes, mostly focussing on wrasses. This was a very popular thread on RC about such issues:

https://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=533167&highlight=seagrass+wrasse

I honestly am not aware of any fishes that are reliably selective for such noxious predators (the nudribranchs).

This seagrass wrasse and related kin have been helpful in many cases... but in other situations have done nothing at all :(

I regret that I do not have any definitive solution beyond pulling all afflicted specimens back to dual isolation tanks and toggle the infected pieces between tanks via baths, dips and manual extraction until the predator is reduced.

It's not as tedious as it sounds... several times weekly for a month usually. I personally have erradicated Xenia and Montipora eating nudibranchs this way in short time.

Ahhh... it is very interesting that you mention Aiptasia!

I was just considering what kind of "gift" I can bring to my Spanish friends when I return to Spain in Febrauary 2006 (tentative in Madrid).

I though maybe the Aiptasia-eating nudibranchs (so-called "Berghia, actually an Aeolidiella species) would be a nice gift :) I contacted a breeder to buy some in January and I will stabilize them and bring them over if I can. I have already brought them to friends in England, Portugal and Germany where they become better established. This aiptasia eating nudibranch is quite pretty, very easy to culture and very profitable too :D

I will trust the organizers of the event to figure out what is the best way to award the specimens (fund-raising raffle, lottery, etc).

I have an article on RC on how to culture them that will eventually be translated into Spanish. And I am of course available to advise on how to get cultures of these nudibranchs started.

Anthony :)

https://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=533167&highlight=seagrass+wrasse

Anthony :)

Hi again.

I already have all my Zoanthus isolated in a 60L aquarium. But I'm not doing the two-tank-shuffle. Perhaps I'll set up another one this week. (thanks for the excuse to set up yet another aquarium).

-----

I'm in the same boat with the Aiptaisia. I have plenty of them to feed a number of specimens of Aeolid nudibranchs.
I know this is a common problem. I think that your gift will be very well received.
